NMEA Mapper 3D
Privacy Policy
Last updated: 26 October 2026
This policy explains how the NMEA Mapper 3D app (for iPhone, iPad and Android) handles information. The app is made by ETNAPPS (“we”, “us”). If you have any question about it, write to us at info@etnapps.com.
The short version
- You don’t need an account, and we never sell or rent your data.
- Your depth maps, tracks, marks, catches, photos and settings are stored on your device. We don’t receive them.
- The app reads your boat’s instruments over the boat’s own Wi-Fi. That connection stays on your local network.
- To show charts, satellite images and seamarks, the app requests them from the map providers listed below, so they see which area you are looking at.
- The free version shows a banner ad from Google AdMob. Where the law requires it, you are asked for consent first. A one-time purchase removes the ads.
- Anonymous usage statistics are sent through Unity Analytics only if you allow them. Crash reports are sent through Unity, the engine the app is built with.

1. Data stored on your device
Everything you record and create in the app is saved in the app’s storage on your device. It is not uploaded to us. This includes:
- the depths you record and the 3D seabed maps built from them;
- your tracks, with their positions, times and depths;
- your marks: their names, types, species, colours, notes, tags, positions and depths;
- your catch log: species, length, weight, bait, notes, photos, and the conditions recorded with each catch (position, depth, water temperature, time, moon and bite period);
- on Android, data received from your boat while the app is in the background, kept only until it is added to your recording;
- map tiles the app has downloaded, so areas you have viewed work offline;
- your settings, such as units, depth and tide corrections and display mode.
Your operating system may include the app’s data in your device backups (for example iCloud or Google backups), according to your device settings.
2. Your boat’s instruments
The app connects over Wi-Fi to your boat’s NMEA gateway, multiplexer, chartplotter or fishfinder, and reads position, depth, speed, course, heading and water temperature from it. With Auto detect, it tries the usual gateway addresses on the network you are connected to until one answers. This connection stays on your local network; nothing from it is sent to us.
3. Your location
Depths are recorded with the position from your boat’s GPS. With your permission, the app also uses your device’s location to:
- show where you are when your boat’s feed has no position;
- work out the sun and moon times and the bite times where you are.
The app uses your location only while it is open, never in the background.
We never receive your location. Your position leaves your device only when you share or export a mark, track or catch. When the app requests map tiles, the map provider learns which area you are viewing (see Online services), and the advertising and statistics services may estimate your approximate area from your IP address (see sections 7 and 8).
You can turn location access off at any time in your device settings. Recording with your boat’s GPS, marks and the map keep working.
4. Camera and photos
If you allow it, the app uses the camera to take photos of your catches, and your photo library to choose a photo or save one there. The photos are stored with your catch log on your device and are not uploaded.
5. Notifications and alarms
Bite-time reminders you set are scheduled on your device as local notifications. They are not sent through any server. On Android, a Recording depths notification shows while a recording runs in the background. The shallow-water and arrival alarms run inside the app.
6. Online services the app uses
Some features need data from online services. When the app requests it, the service receives the request and, as with any internet request, your device’s IP address and basic technical information (such as the app and system version).
| Feature | Provider | What is sent |
|---|---|---|
| Street chart | OpenStreetMap | The map tiles needed for the area on your screen, which reveal the general area you are viewing |
| Satellite map | Google (Google Maps) | The map tiles needed for the area on your screen |
| Seamarks | OpenSeaMap | The seamark tiles needed for the area on your screen |
| Banner ads (free version) | Google AdMob | See Advertising |
| Usage statistics (only if you allow them) | Unity Analytics | See Usage statistics and crash reports |
| Crash reports | Unity Diagnostics | See Usage statistics and crash reports |
| Remove ads purchase | Apple App Store or Google Play | Handled by the store; see Purchases |
These providers handle the requests under their own privacy policies: OpenStreetMap Foundation, Google, OpenSeaMap, Unity, Apple.
Tide predictions, sun and moon times and bite times are calculated on your device, without contacting any service.
7. Advertising
The free version shows a banner ad provided by Google AdMob. To show and measure ads, AdMob may collect your IP address, device and app information, your approximate location (from the IP address), interactions with the ads, and an advertising identifier where one is available (the Android advertising ID). On iPhone and iPad the app does not ask for permission to track you, so Apple’s advertising identifier is not available to it.
- In the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland, and wherever else the law requires it, Google’s consent form asks you first whether ads may be personalised. You can change your choice at any time in Menu › Remove ads › Privacy options.
- After you buy Remove ads, the app no longer loads ads.
Google uses this data under its own policies; see How Google uses information from apps that use its services.
8. Usage statistics and crash reports
Usage statistics (Unity Analytics)
The first time you use the app, it asks whether you’d like to share anonymous usage statistics. Nothing is sent unless you choose Allow. If you do, Unity Analytics collects statistics about how the app is used: when it is opened and for how long, the app version, the device model, operating system and language, the approximate country (from the IP address), and purchases made in the app. They are tied to a random identifier that Unity creates for the installation, not to your name. They never include your position, depths, marks, tracks or photos. We use them only to understand how the app is used and to improve it.
You can change your choice at any time with Settings › Share usage statistics. Turning it off stops the statistics and asks Unity to delete those already collected from your device. Unity processes this data under its privacy policy.
Crash reports (Unity Diagnostics)
When the app crashes, freezes or hits an error, a report may be sent through Unity’s diagnostics service so we can find and fix the problem. A report contains technical information: the app version, the device model and operating system, details of the error, and the last lines of the app’s technical log. It may be tied to a random identifier for the installation. It does not include your depth maps, marks, tracks or photos.
9. Sharing, exporting and importing
When you share a mark, a track or a catch, or export your marks as a GPX file, the app hands the data to the app or person you choose through your device’s share options. What happens next is up to that app or person. Files you import are read on your device.
10. Permissions
| Permission | Used for | If you decline |
|---|---|---|
| Local network (iPhone, iPad) | Connecting to your boat’s NMEA gateway or instruments | The app can’t receive data from your boat |
| Location | Your position without NMEA GPS; sun, moon and bite times (only while the app is open) | Everything else works with your boat’s GPS |
| Camera | Photos of your catches | You can still choose photos from your library |
| Photos | Choosing a catch photo, or saving one to your library | Photos can’t be added from or saved to the library |
| Notifications | Bite-time reminders; the recording notification on Android | No reminders; on Android, background recording may stop |
| Network | Maps, ads, purchases, statistics and crash reports | Maps you have viewed and everything on your device still work |
You can change these permissions at any time in your device settings.
11. Purchases
The app is downloaded from the Apple App Store or Google Play, and the Remove ads purchase is made through them. Payments are handled by those stores; we never receive your payment details. The app only learns whether you have bought Remove ads, so it can stop showing ads and restore the purchase on a new device.
12. What we don’t do
- We don’t require an account or collect your name, e-mail or phone number.
- We don’t sell, rent or trade any data.
- We don’t run a server that stores your depth maps, tracks, marks, catches or location.
- We don’t ask to track you across other companies’ apps and websites.
13. How long data is kept
Data on your device stays there until you delete it in the app or uninstall the app. Usage statistics and crash reports are kept by Unity according to its policies, and usage statistics are deleted when you turn them off in Settings. Data collected for ads is kept by Google according to its policies. E-mails you send us are deleted once your question is answered and no longer needed.
14. Security
Your data is protected by your device’s own security, such as its passcode and encryption. Most requests to online services, such as maps, ads, statistics and crash reports, use secure (HTTPS) connections. The NMEA data from your boat travels over your boat’s own Wi-Fi network, as your instruments send it.
15. Children
NMEA Mapper 3D is not directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country), and we don’t knowingly collect information from children.
16. Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example under the EU and UK General Data Protection Regulation or the California Consumer Privacy Act), you may have the right to ask about, correct, delete or object to the processing of personal data about you. Because the app keeps your data on your device, you can see, change and delete it directly in the app. You can withdraw consent for usage statistics in Settings and for personalised ads in Privacy options at any time. For anything else, write to info@etnapps.com and we will reply within 30 days. You also have the right to complain to the data protection authority in your country.
17. Changes to this policy
If the app’s handling of data changes, we will update this page and the date at the top. For important changes, we will also tell you in the app or in the release notes.
