RangeFinder
Privacy Policy
Last updated: 25 October 2026
This policy explains how the RangeFinder app (for iPhone and Android) handles information. The app is made by ETNAPPS (“we”, “us”). If you have any question about it, write to us at info@etnapps.com.
The short version
- You don’t need an account. There are no ads, and we never sell or rent your data.
- The camera image is analysed on your device to find and measure people, vehicles and animals. It is never uploaded.
- Readings you save, their photos and your settings are stored on your device. We don’t receive them.
- RangeFinder doesn’t use your location or microphone, and it doesn’t send usage statistics, crash reports or anything else over the internet.

1. How RangeFinder works
RangeFinder estimates distance from what the camera sees. An object-detection model built into the app finds people, vehicles and animals in the camera image. The app then works out the distance from the object’s typical size, the camera’s field of view and the angle of your phone.
All of this happens on your device. The app works without an internet connection and doesn’t contact our servers or anyone else’s.
2. Camera and photos
- The app uses the back camera to show the live view and to detect and measure objects.
- Camera images are processed in your device’s memory and discarded straight away. They are not recorded, uploaded or shared.
- A photo is kept only when you tap the shutter button to save a reading. It is a small image (up to 640 pixels) of what the camera showed, stored with that reading inside the app (see section 4). It is not added to your photo library.
- On iPhone, the torch button only switches the camera’s light on and off.
3. Motion sensor and vibration
The app reads your phone’s motion sensor (accelerometer) to know how the phone is tilted. This corrects the measurement for pointing up or down and drives the level indicator. The tilt angle is stored with a reading when you save it; otherwise it is not kept.
The app can vibrate briefly when it locks onto an object or saves a reading. You can turn this off in Settings with Vibrate when locked.
4. Data stored on your device
Everything below is saved in the app’s own storage on your device. It is not uploaded to us.
| What | What it contains | How to delete it |
|---|---|---|
| Saved readings | Distance, ± range, confidence, the object measured, which checks agreed, zoom, field of view, tilt, auto or manual mode, and the time you saved it | Delete it in History, or uninstall the app |
| Reading photos | A small photo of the camera view, saved with each reading | Deleted together with its reading |
| Exported history | The CSV file the app creates when you tap Export CSV | Uninstall the app |
| Your own objects | The names and sizes you enter for custom objects | Uninstall the app |
| Settings | Units, phone height, calibration and its date, default person, night mode and display options | Uninstall the app |
Your device’s own backups (iCloud or Google) may include the app’s data. Those backups are handled by Apple or Google under their own privacy policies, and we can’t see them.
5. Exporting your history
When you tap Export CSV in History, the app writes your saved readings to a CSV file in its storage on your device. Nothing is sent anywhere. If you copy that file somewhere else, it is handled by the app or service you copy it to.
6. Usage statistics and crash reports
RangeFinder doesn’t collect usage statistics or crash reports. The app is built with Unity, and Unity’s analytics, crash reporting and hardware statistics are turned off in RangeFinder. The app contains no advertising or analytics SDKs.
If you have chosen to share analytics with app developers in your device’s settings, Apple or Google may give us anonymous crash and performance reports for the app. They don’t identify you, and you can turn this sharing off in your device’s settings at any time.
If you email us, we receive what you choose to send, such as your email address and message. We use it only to answer you.
7. Permissions
- Camera (iPhone and Android): to show the live view and measure objects. Without it, the app can’t measure.
- Vibration (Android): for the short vibration when the app locks on. Android grants this without asking.
RangeFinder doesn’t ask for your location, contacts, microphone, photo library or any other personal data.
8. Purchases and ratings
If you buy RangeFinder, the payment is handled by the App Store or Google Play. We don’t receive your payment details; the stores give us only sales totals. Ratings and reviews you leave are handled and published by the store under its own rules.
9. What we don’t do
- We don’t ask you to create an account or sign in.
- We don’t show ads or include advertising SDKs.
- We don’t track you across other apps or websites, and we don’t use advertising identifiers.
- We don’t collect your location, contacts or photo library.
- We don’t sell, rent or share your data. We don’t receive it in the first place.
10. How long data is kept
Data stays on your device until you delete it. Deleting a reading in History removes it and its photo. Uninstalling the app removes all of its data from the device. We hold no copy, so there is nothing to delete on our side.
Emails you send us are kept only as long as we need them to answer you.
11. Security
Your data is kept in the app’s own storage, protected by your device’s security, such as its passcode and encryption. Because RangeFinder doesn’t send your data over the internet, it isn’t exposed in transit.
12. Children
RangeFinder is suitable for all ages. It collects no personal information from anyone, including children under 13 (or the equivalent age where you live).
13. Your rights
Depending on where you live, for example under the GDPR in the EU and UK or the CCPA in California, you have the right to access, correct and delete your personal data and to object to its use. RangeFinder doesn’t send us personal data, so you control it directly on your device by editing or deleting it. If you have written to us, you can ask to see or delete those emails at info@etnapps.com.
14. Changes to this policy
If the app changes in a way that affects your privacy, we will update this policy and the date at the top. Important changes will also be mentioned in the app’s release notes.
